Please Help us Save Our Off-leash Area!

newslttr pic ridgebacks running 05-05-21FIDO supports the city's plan for Fiesta Island that the California Coastal Commission must approve!

The city's plan preserves the off-leash area open and intact with no roads or fences bisecting it. FIDO has worked for 15 years to get this through, and this will finally - finally! - be the last approval for Fiesta Island's off-leash area so it can be recognized by the State of California and City of San Diego.

Soon it will be the time when your public input will matter the most. We will be emailing you to ask you to go to our website at www.fidosd.org for instructions and bullet points to use in writing your email comments.

We expect the Fiesta Island issue to be on the June agenda, so that means comments will open in late May. That's when we hope you will help by submitting comments! You will only have a short eight-day window in which to submit comments once we know the date of the meeting, so time will be of the essence. You will need to act as soon as you get the FIDO email.

We'll be asking you to PLEASE submit personal stories about why it's important to keep it intact as an off-leash park for you and your family, focusing on the benefits to people and not just dogs. Our task is to educate the Commissioners about the importance of water access for off-leash users of all ages and backgrounds and support the City-adopted proposal since it establishes access to this shoreline for the most number of uses and the most number of users.

(If you live outside the city of San Diego, please mention this in your comments as the Coastal Commission looks for visitor use of park areas.)

Volunteer to Get the Word Out -- May 22/23, or May 29/30/31

We will be at the island on two upcoming weekends with our clipboards, handing out fliers, signing up new members, and explaining to folks what the upcoming California Coastal Commission vote means -- and how important it is for them to participate!

If you can join us, we need volunteers. We ask that you wear a mask to make those you talk with comfortable, and we will have board members there at all times to greet you, explain what to say, and answer questions.

We will be working on Saturday and Sunday May 22 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and again on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (Memorial Day), May 29, 30 and 31, again from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We ask that you commit to a two-hour shift if possible.

If you can volunteer, send an email to info@fidosd.org telling us which dates and which two-hour time slots you are available for.

This is our final push in the final step to save our space -- let's make sure we give it our all!
